MB Challenge - Part One: Picking a Niche
First off, I want to apologize for the delay, but my grandma has not been doing well at all, and I’ve been at the hospital almost every day, so it’s been tough on the family. But I’m taking time to write this up, as it’s important I think.
The time has come for use to move onto the first step of the MonkeyBlogger Challenge. Picking a niche. Now, this is one of the toughest, and most crucial steps when it comes to starting a blog or website with the goal of selling for profit.
So for our blog, that’s the first thing we want to figure out. What is it we want to do with this blog? What do we want to promote? A product? A service? Is is a news blog? Thes are all things we need to consider.
I’ve done a lot of research and thought regarding this, and I’ve decided to go with a news blog. But the next step is choosing what type of news blog. Considering there are many news blogs, I don’t want to be too general with my niche. For example, I wouldn’t go for a blog like www.tuaw.com, which covers everything Apple, but something like www.appleiphoneapps.com, which covers just iPhone apps.
So I’ve picked four general niches, and I’m looking for the help of my readers to pick which one to go with, and then what sub-niche to go with. So, in the comments, leave which of the four you think I should choose and why, as well as some sub-niche ideas. I’ll consider all and then choose what to go with, and we’ll discuss that in another post.
So without further adu, here are the four niche choices.
- Technology
- Music
- Television
- Sports
Now it’s time for your input. ![]()

I would go with the technology > nokia phones > symbian niche. Since I used to have a blogger blog about symbian, I know that it brings in a lot of traffic from search engines without the need for any hard work or SEO.

I think you should go into the technology niche. It is something difficult to dominate, but if you have extraordinary services or news then you will do smacking well with it. Also it is the closest to a “blogging” site, about blogging, for usually it’ll include a blogger’s gadgets and accessories. I glad you didn’t try for the MMO niche, that one blogs will fail!
Go with music Mark!
I’d love to see you do a music blog.

If all of those are something that interest you then I would think about the choice at a different level, choosing the right keyword(s). If you aren’t subscribed to a service this one is free though limited http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/ You want more than 200 searches for the term a day with less than a million hits on google for the quoted keywords(s). This was something I learned from Courtney Tuttle

Don’t do technology, that would be too easy. I say go with sports. I was actually thinking about starting a sports blog recently too but i’ll keep my ARD site for the challenge

Do a blog on sports fan apparel and souvenirs. Make it sort of a buying guide. Monetize with eBay affiliate using either the EPN Toolkit or phpBay plugin (free or paid). These items have good search volumes with a huge long tail potential. There is always something to write about from NFL jerseys to souvenir baseballs to commemorative hockey pucks. With good link building, writing and a little other work you should be seeing at least $500 a month within 3-6 months, maybe more $$$ than that even.
